One of the main reasons Dani and I became friends so fast was that she would say "when do you want to go" whenever I mentioned a place I wanted to see. This was the exact case for Puerto Rico. We bought our tickets less than two weeks after mentioning the destination. We did a decent amount of planning what we wanted to see beforehand but were lucky enough to have really great hotel staff that hooked us up with great knowledge of the island.
The rainforest was definitely one of our top destinations. El Yunque is a beautiful and very humid forest. Nothing compared to what we were used to seeing. We got up early and headed towards the forest. After finally figuring out where to park to get to the La Mina Trail we headed down the path towards the promised waterfall. After a winding trail, we finally hit the La Mina waterfall! It was absolutely gorgeous.
Of course, we had to go swim underneath it. This task was a bit harder than we expected. The water was freezing, and the current from the falls was so strong. After getting the courage to dunk all the way in, we tried swimming close to the falls. So much tougher than we thought. After swimming around in the little pool area, we decided to explore a little more. "Carefully" climbing down the rocks, we made our way to smaller more secluded waterfalls.
Scrambling back up to our stuff and the trail seemed to be way more difficult than on the way down. We eventually made it and walked the rest of the trail. Realizing it was a long extended loop, we turned around to save some time. A day well spent in the rainforest.
Puerto Rico was 10/10. Still one of my favorite places, be sure to check out El Yunque if you go! As always, happy adventuring :) . Become an official Mountain Chicks member below!
