So Black Friday was a month ago. I’ll admit, I did a little shopping. This is actually the only time of the year I’ll buy myself new clothes; however, I will say that I only spent an hour at the mall in anticipation for this hike.
I’ve been falling in love more and more with Northern Arizona. The pine trees, breezy weather and brick buildings have a way of singing to me. Alas, a few weeks ago I decided to help cure my case of northern AZ wanderlust with a Flagstaff hike: O’Leary Peak. The trail takes place on Mt. Elden. For the record, Mt. Elden has like a million and one trails, but finding the trailhead for O’Leary Peak Trail isn’t difficult. It’s located just right of the O’Leary Group Campground. The peak is a dormant volcano, so it’s kind of cool to see this massive structure standing before you as you start your ascend.
The trail started out pretty steep and it kept going from there. After a few switchbacks, we were welcomed by some more. The route was pretty open and we could see the lookout tower from down below. The constant switchbacks made this trail seem much longer than the planned for 5 miles but determined to get to the top, we prevailed. *dun dun dunnnnnn*
We eventually hit a portion of the trail that was a straight shot to the lookout tower. A snow covered path stood between us and our destination point. I honestly couldn’t stop looking behind me. Seeing the whole city of Flagstaff down below was so different than the pine trees and woods I’m used to. After about 20 more minutes we hit the lookout tower. It happened to be closed this day but we had the whole peak to ourselves so there wasn’t anything to complain about.
The steep climb up made the hike down easyyyyyyyyyy. I would honestly recommend this hike to anyone that wants a challenege with an awesome view. Maybe you’ll get lucky and get a peep inside the tower!
