Feeling myself emotionally attached to these hiking socks as I put them on. Finding myself already quite attached to these boots, these boots that are the best I’ve ever owned! These boots that have kept my feet dry and warm ankle deep in a creek or rivers edge shooting the photographs I am falling so in love with.
These boots that have been the central part of a snowshoeing setup taking me to breathtaking beauty that leaves me full of awe. Taking me to unforgettable views and experiences that I’ve been seeing in my dreams my entire life. This pair of boots is exactly the same kind that Jessica bought at the beginning of our Pacific Northwest adventure life…
Strapping them on all these thoughts are condensed into a little smile to myself. We’re about to meet yet another amazing new friend as a result of the new reality that we are having a hand in creating. A reality in which we socialize with like-minded individuals who like to get outdoors and hike, and take great photos to document and share their experiences. It started with Jessica getting involved in a small Instagram based hiking group called Mountain Chicks that is run and promoted by women. Unlike other similar groups that have recently started up, this one is all inclusive. That is the kicker. A group where women feel safe and are able to network in a great environment, yet still welcomes men to be a part of the hikes and share in the experiences.
This group was originally going to be for fun group hikes and networking and has since grown into what I feel is quite possibly the most important direction social media has ever been taken. Sometimes in this world where modern day conveniences isolate and make us socially awkward, this is our chance to get the pendulum swinging back in the right direction. This is us at our best. This is us wanting to be better and connect with nature and each other again. This is all of us saying we’re not just individuals who live a sterile feeling-less life. This is our protest to meeting up at the bar to find friends. This is our willingness to be on the edge of social norms and make friends via the internet. An internet like you’ve never been a part of before.
Never been a part of? Today's internet is so much more transparent and interactive and supportive in this hiking/outdoor/adventure community of Instagram. So in this world of genuine support and like mindedness a community has been born of people all saying, I can’t believe I’m making friends via the internet. Weird or taboo is now a conversation of the past. We stand here on the edge of the next huge community of people from teens to their golden years that are tired of watching the outdoors from their couch and on the Discovery Channel. We have a tribe of individuals rising up to say I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ll volunteer to plan and lead a hike!
From what I’ve been a part of, and from all the amazing stories I see every weekend, this chapter, this tribe, this phenomena of an internet based hiking group is going to change the way we socialize. We are about to reset the standard in how people of this century are going to be interacting. I’m not what you might call a huge “believer” in people… but from all the interactions I’ve witnessed on these group events, good and bad, I see real people really growing as individuals. I see it in person and I get to watch them evolve via my Instagram feed as I write a line of support on their latest post to let them know I appreciate the effort they go through to share their experiences with me. This is a world in which you write your own future. Thank you for following our adventures and supporting us with your comments and likes! Cant wait to meet everyone out there!
