Living in Arizona has forced me to change my perspective on gear. Our summers come with unbearable temperatures, so carrying heavy equipment around isn’t the most ideal. Not to mention, I always have to make sure I’m wearing the right items, I’m fueling up, and I’m making the most out of the time I spend in the sun. I’ve been loving keeping it simple and carrying lightweight pieces, without skimping on quality of course. Below have been my go-to adventure essentials this season. I’m hoping these are items you can take with you on your adventures too!
In my pack, I make sure to bring the usual: a bladder, snacks, first aid kit. Recently, though, I have been adding dry-sacks to my pack. Often I find that I toss items into my bag only to have trouble finding them later. I love stuff sacks to keep things organized but having a waterproof one available is a bonus. I know I’m going to see myself in some tropical locations this summer, which can bring rain and swimming holes. Putting your camera, phone, I.D. or items you’d like to keep dry into a dry-sack is an excellent habit to have. You’ll give yourself some extra organization and extra protection from unexpected conditions.
Solar Powered Electronics
Why waste disposable batteries when you can have solar powered ones? I’ve found that I burn through money and time having to check and buy new batteries for some of my gear. Recently, I’ve been making the switch to items that primarily get their energy from the sun. There are some great companies out there that have lanterns you can strap onto the outside of your pack as you’re hiking, allowing the sun to charge them. Some of these items can even be used to charge your phone and other small electronics. I suggest doing your research to find the perfect renewable energy sourced item for your adventures. You may find that you would get more use out of a solar powered stove rather than a lantern or vice versa.
Sun protection is a must! There are even clothing items nowadays that come with UV protection in the fabric, so you can give your skin a break from the sun’s harmful rays. I’m guilty of skipping the use of sunscreen on my face because it can tend to break me out or runs into my eyes from sweating. I’ve found that ensuring I have a separate sunscreen for my face and body gives me no excuse to skip out on protecting myself!
Snacks are such an essential part of the adventure! You need to keep your body fueled and hydrated correctly to keep going. While I still primarily eat healthy fats and carbs, I find myself leaning more towards fruit-based items during the summer months. The sugars from fruits keep me from crashing and makes me feel refreshed! You can also add some fresh fruit to your pack bladder for a little flavor while you’re out on the trail!
There are so many items I’m finding to be a “must” this summer. These are only some of them! I’d love to hear what sorts of essentials you take with you during the warmer season. Let me know in the comments!
